Coconut Oil For Thyroid Health?

There is an awful lot of “buzz” going around about the use of coconut oil for thyroid health. Have you heard?

This is great news because in the not too distant past, the use of coconut oil was looked upon unfavorably and avoided by almost everyone.

It was even demonized by some as it was thought to cause harm because it was a saturated fat.

We now know that nothing could be further from the truth!

Yes, coconut oil is a saturated fat, but it’s one of the healthiest oils you could ever consume.

In fact, many people consider the use of coconut oil for thyroid health very much a miracle product!

Coconut oil for thyroid is very beneficial

For decades, one of the most ignored aspects of proper nutrition in the West has been the consumption of good, healthy fat.

It’s important to know that the body requires healthy fat to carry out many of its daily processes. This is especially true for the thyroid gland as it oversees digestion and the regulation of each cells metabolism. More than protein or carbohydrate, the thyroid gland depends on good, healthy fat for optimum function.

Without proper regulation of thyroid hormones, many bodily processes are adversely affected and slow way down.

Examples are:

  • digestion
  • healing and repair
  • immune system response
  • hormone and enzyme production

*Also, body temperature dips to lower than normal levels.

Symptoms Of A Tired Thyroid Gland

Today, many people suffer from overworked and drastically undernourished thyroid glands.

(This is also true of every other gland that makes up the glandular system too).

Over time, the combination of nutritional deficiencies and chronic stress can affect the thyroid gland negatively. As a result, it becomes sluggish and weak. Eventually, a hypothyroidism diagnosis results.

As a result, coconut oil for thyroid has become an increasingly popular natural method to restore balance and optimal function to this all too important gland.

Unlike medication that works on symptoms alone, coconut oil for thyroid functions on a deeper level to heal the source of a thyroid imbalance.

Many times people have a blood test done to measure the amount of T3, T4 and TSH levels circulating in the system.

Often, people are sent home being told their thyroids are functioning normally when they’re not. Despite lab results that reflect normal TSH levels, there is still an underlying issue.

In his book, The Thyroid Solution, Ridha Arem, M.D., Associate Professor of Endocrinology and Metabolism, Baylor College of Medicine expresses this exact point.  He says,

"Many people may be suffering from minute imbalances that have not yet resulted in abnormal blood tests. If we included people with low-grade hypothyroidism whose blood tests are normal, the frequency of hypothyroidism would no doubt exceed 10 percent of the population."

"What is of special concern, though, is that many people whose test results are dismissed as normal could continue to have symptoms of an under active thyroid. Their moods, emotions, and overall well-being are affected by this imbalance, yet they are not receiving the care they need to get to the root of their problems."

"Even if the TSH level is in the lower segment of normal range, a person may still be suffering from low-grade hypothyroidism.” (3)

The Basal Thermometer Test

The basal thermometer test is really the best way to determine whether or not you're thyroid is functioning within normal limits.

Repeated blood tests showed that I was in the normal range even though I suffered many of the symptoms above.

However, when I performed the basal thermometer test it was clear that I had low thyroid function. My body temperature revealed what I needed to know.

Since beginning my nutritional program 7 years ago, the coconut oil has helped to normalize my thyroid function.

Basal Thermometer Test Instructions

For this test, we recommend only mercury thermometers. We have found that digital thermometers do not work as well because they are not as accurate. This test is all about being as accurate as possible.

The basal thermometer test is performed for 3 mornings in a row.

  1. The evening before shake down the thermometer below 95.
  2. In the morning, it's most important that you remain on your back, don't take covers off, don't get up and go to the bathroom, don't read anything, don't open blinds, don't do anything but stare at the ceiling and turn your head to look at the clock.
  3. Leave thermometer under your armpit for 4 minutes.
  4. After 4 minutes is up, look at thermometer and record your temperature.
  5. Do this for 3 mornings in a row.

*Always remember to shake down the thermometer the night before or your temperature could be off in the morning!

To calculate your overall temperature, add the 3 temperatures together and take an average.

Contributing Factors For

The use of coconut oil for thyroid can help alleviate stress caused by the following factors. These factors contribute to the epidemic of hypothyroidism that exists today.

These factors are:

  1. Low iodine intake.
  2. A diet heavy in refined sugars, grains and caffeine.
  3. Consumption of goitrogenic foods like broccoli, cauliflower, brussel sprouts, turnips, cabbage, mustard, millet, peanuts, peanut butter, pine nuts and soybeans.
  4. Environmental stresses such as chemical pollutants, pesticides, mercury and flouride.
  5. Emotional stresses (anger, grief, guilt, fear, anxiety).
  6. Medical stress (radiation, x-rays, drugs).
  7. Yeast overgrowth (i.e. candida albicans).
  8. Heavy metals.

By consuming coconut oil daily it will nourish and support the function of your thyroid gland. This allows the gland to recover and release increased levels of thyroid hormone which effectively activates metabolism.

The increased levels of thyroid hormone in the bloodstream help to speed up all the processes that were once performing at less than ideal levels.

This is a very important reason to consume coconut oil for thyroid health. Most people experience longer lasting energy, increased weight loss and greater sense of well-being.
