Below are some important facts about coconut oil that are helpful to know. Let's start at the beginning because for those of you that have never used this oil before, you might be asking, what is it?

What Is Coconut Oil?

Coconut oil is a healthy saturated fat that’s considered to be a
miracle food and medicine. Many around the world think it’s the healthiest oil on the planet.

How Is Coconut Oil Made?

This tropical oil is made by extracting the meat and water from the coconut.

There are unrefined and refined varieties of oil that are produced today. The process of extraction consists of two methods.

One is called a dry process. Oil that is made this way comes from copra (dried coconut meat).

The other is a wet process where the oil comes from fresh, raw meat.

Around the world, coconut oil production is big business. The estimated worldwide production last year amounted to millions and millions of metric tons.

The Philippines is the biggest exporter of coconut oil. They export 80% of their total production.

Coconut Oil Quality

By far, the best choice for consumption is raw, virgin, and unrefined. Beyond that, a good choice for everyday use is expeller-pressed or cold pressed.

Stay away from hydrogenated coconut oil forever and ever and ever!

This is a sign that the oil is pure and very abundant in antioxidants, essential fatty acids and other beneficial nutrients.

Coconut Oil Expiration and Storage

Raw, virgin and unrefined oil can keep for up to 5 years or more. It has been noted that a jar of raw, virgin and organic oil lasted upwards of 7 years! This is due to it’s high abundance of antioxidants along with its other nutrients that protect it from oxidation.

Most people go thru a jar of oil way before it would ever expire.

The shelf life for refined coconut oils vary but the average life span is 1.5 years. Some may last 2 years before going rancid.

One of the best advantages for using coconut oil is that it doesn’t have special storage requirements. It keeps just fine on your counter or in a pantry.

No refrigeration is required.
